Does he treat his steel the same way?

[ there's a harsh, angry note to his voice. ]

[ there is so much kara could say to that. the fact that giyuu isn't sure how that one treats his blade -

but he doesn't get a chance, before another memory has slipped between them, and by the time this one ends, ookurikara is left speechless again, for an entirely different reason. ]

[ he takes a breath, and nods. ]

Our swords are our lives - not the same way as you, or any other samurai. We were swords first, before we were given these bodies. If they break, we break.

That's why.

[ he catches that look... it must be odd for a human, to realize their weapon might be more than that, huh? they so rarely stop to think about them, unless they're in battle. ]

...I don't know if yours has a spirit or not. But most of us do. That's why I asked if it has a name.

[ his expression is somber, but not quite sympathetic as he looks at giyuu's sword, reads the description, and listens. ]

...Maybe. But that doesn't mean they loved their masters any less, or that they won't still carry the burden of failing to protect them.

Not necessarily. Even the best swordsmen can meet their end at someone stronger, or faster, or smarter than they are - or even someone luckier. All it takes is one unlucky turn in a battle for everything to go wrong.

But there is always one who knows our blade better than the reset, no matter their skill, and one who cares for us the most. That's usually our master, and we want to protect them the most. That's our job, as swords - to protect.

You won't, but your sword might.

[ kara shrugs. ]

Many of us pride ourselves on our ability to protect our masters. Most of you wield us with the intention of protecting something, don't you? We may be capable of killing, but that is the real reason we're made. Is it that surprising we'd hold ourselves to that standard? The ability of the master doesn't change that.
